The value of Sticky Poems in the classroom:
- Encourages pupils to think about stories and poems.
- Helps pupils to develop knowledge of the conventions of writing.
- Encourages opinions and thoughts.
- Demonstrates that writing poetry can be fun.
Skills used:
Sticky Poems ustilise a variety of skills; sequencing, sorting, grouping; analysing,
comparing and contrasting, planning and making decisions to name just a few.
Putting poems back in to sequence can teach children about texts and how they
are constructed.
Suggested activities:
- Take known poems and let your pupils create their own from the mixed-up
words. Then discuss the similarities between their own poems. How close are
their poems to the originals and how close are their meanings?
- In a de-sequequenced poem, pupils look for clues in the rhyme pattern and
consider the poems’s meaning.
